We have an exciting opportunity for a Community Organizer - Housing Counseling and CTA role in a San Francisco-based Non-profit Organization. The organization is a community developer with many roles, including community advocates, organizers, and planners, as well as developers and managers of affordable housing, with the mission of building community and improving residents' quality of life. The Community Organiser will work with the organizing team to achieve civic engagement goals and to provide housing counseling to residents through community outreach and education.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to lead workshops and meetings in both English and Cantonese.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to issues that affect low-income immigrant neighborhoods.
  • Biliteracy in Chinese and fluency in Cantonese are required.
  • Problem-solving abilities that are both creative and comprehensive.
  • Flexibility and the ability to perform a variety of activities are required.
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to be patient.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team structure
  • Commitment to a broad vision of community development and improving the lives of the poor.
  • Capability to work in the evenings and on weekends.
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, sociology, psychology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • English and Chinese language proficiency.
  • Excel spreadsheets and basic word processing skills.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide staffing assistance and translation services in relation to, but not limited to, tenant empowerment regarding tenant rights and community advocacy; inform tenants about neighborhood-related issues like land use, transportation, public improvements, and community facilities; and organize meetings, events, and activities.
  • Provide leadership development training in areas such as organization, public speaking, and other leadership skills.
  • Offer housing counseling and information on tenant rights
  • Conduct intake on low-income tenants (mostly Chinese-speaking and monolingual) and provide housing counseling by identifying housing issues, responding to inquiries, disseminating knowledge, providing assistance or translation services, and providing referrals.
  • Maintain and keep up with the current system for monitoring and reporting on housing counseling casework, and carry out follow-up work on both individual and building-wide cases.
  • Build and maintain productive partnerships with tenant groups and community organizations, and collaborate to increase civic participation and voter turnout.
  • Encourage civic engagement discussions in the low-income community and help civic engagement initiatives reach their goals.
  • Embody the values of the organization (respect and compassion, empowerment, and teamwork).
  • Ensure a pleasant and safe workplace.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and safe working practices.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
