We have an exciting opportunity for a Staff Attorney role in a non-profit organization based in Oakland. It is a legal services organization that uses bilingual legal assistance, education, and advocacy to protect and advance the rights of low-income, immigrant, Black, and Latinx societies. They are seeking a person with the necessary skills and qualifications to fill this position.

Job Requirements:

  • A strong sense of social, economic, and racial justice must be present in the applicant.
  • J.D. was admitted and active in the California bar.
  • Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese is preferred.
  • Strong leadership abilities; familiarity with and adherence to the principles of community law.
  • Outstanding writing, research, analytical, and oral communication abilities.
  • Proven commitment to civil liberties, tenants’ rights, and public interest law.
  • Ability to collaborate on projects with lawyers, other staff members, and various community organizations.
  • Proven dedication to diversity within the office, as well as a personal approach that appreciates all individuals and respects differences based on race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexuality, religion, skill, social economic circumstance, immigration status, and arrest or conviction history.
  • Experience working with clients in crisis or trauma survivors.
  • Dedication and knowledge of the impact intersectionality have on the experiences of clients and employees.
  • Demonstrated capacity for collaborating on projects with lawyers, other employees across the organization, various community organizations, stakeholders, and policymakers.

 

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Providing direct representation to low-income tenancies in unlawful detainer trials and appeals.
  • Advocating on behalf of low-income tenants at administrative hearings.
  • Proactively defending low-income tenants in significant affirmative litigation to uphold their rights in our neighborhood.
  • Monitoring and/or consulting at clinics and workshops.
  • To increase community awareness of tenants' rights, present Know Your Rights workshops to trusted community-based organizations.
  • Attending community gatherings, stakeholder meetings, city council hearings, and other events as a representative of the business and its clients.
